Description
Often spurred by an upcoming anniversary, celebration, or other special event, U.S. colleges and universities have been diligent in publishing their institutional histories. In the past, authors of these works have relied on archival collections housed in their institution, local historical records, newspaper accounts and other primary source materials, which are often available locally for their use. Even using records that are conveniently located, can take years of research. The question, however, always remains as to whether the researcher has found everything available to tell the complete story of the institution. Today, with the increasing availability of digitized historical records, periodicals, and newspapers via the Internet, and subscription databases, it is possible to find sources that might have been published far from the home of the college or university under study. "Regardless of one's primary stance toward technology, the benefits of these new tools cannot be ignored. In a number of important ways, electronic research is not a replacement for conventional research methods, but a complement to the types of more traditional archival exploration that most historians employ-and, let us admit, enjoy" (Abrahamson 1997, 219). Often by sitting in the comfort of one's home the past can come alive by searching the web, where exciting unexplored sources can yield new information on the history of the institution.
