Description

Robert E. Lee High School, with more than 1,600 students and 170 staff members, is in Goose Creek CISD, where learning is a personal experience. Every student learns with iPad. Teachers and students use a variety of classroom curriculum spaces outside the classroom and virtual environments to support instructional practices and learning goals. Spaces in the library, classrooms, and other areas on the campus are flexible spaces to allow for student engagement and collaboration. A new digital Cloud Lab has flexible furnishings that allow students to change the environment as needed. Students are engaged in new levels of collaboration and teamwork through the use of iPad. For example, in Biology students use iPad to learn routine dissections as a team. One student uses the iPad camera to take pictures and video with a second student taking written notes in Pages, while a third performs the dissection. Students share their dissection notes. When asked, students believe this format helped with recall and comprehension and made them more useful and interesting. In addition, students can use the media collected during the dissection in other apps to expand on their learning. Learning for teachers is embedded into the school culture. Online courses in iTunes U allow teachers to work at their own pace. Learning is also social; for example, teachers host peer led Technology Learning Lunches. Teachers who have mastered an app or technology-related skill teach others during their lunch break.
